Grateful for Dance: The Gift of Being Present
During the month of November at Dance Expressions, we take the time to reflect on the countless reasons we are grateful for dance. We encourage our teachers and students alike to look inward and investigate why we gravitate towards this art form. I find that one of the most beautiful gifts dance offers is the chance to be fully present. In a world that constantly pulls our attention in every direction, immersing ourselves in movement, music, and expression feels like a breath of fresh air. When we walk into the studio, we reconnect face-to-face, set aside our screens, and share the joy of dancing together.
The act of being present also engages both our minds and hearts in powerful ways. I see it when students thoughtfully work through a complex sequence or quickly reverse a movement on the spot. I hear it when Ms. Megan’s dancers respond to her calm reminders to breathe deeply. I notice it when Ms. Charlene’s tap students listen closely to her as she sings her rhythms, striving to match her sound. And I observe it when Ms. Jen’s ballet students take her imagery to heart, discovering new layers of body awareness.
Staying grounded in the present isn’t always easy. Our thoughts often drift toward the past or future. But dance reminds us that this art is a journey. One where, yes, our past efforts shape us, our future goals inspire us, but the best thing we can do in each moment is try. Each class and rehearsal becomes an opportunity to do our best, and just dance!
Being present and part of our DE community truly is a gift that keeps on giving.
Wishing all our DE families a safe, joyful, and heartwarming holiday season!
